I've always dreamt of riding a helicopter when I was young. Seeing how people ride over beautiful landscapes and seascapes make me want to experience this myself. It was further enhanced by big movie screens and later on IMAX screens which put you in the driver's seat, at least virtually. It's a different top perspective which we don't normally see, not even from a plane.
But let's face it, I am scared of heights and the fact that helicopters have large windows which let's you see everything down below even makes it worse. Not to forget hearing about real-life crashes that happen at popular national parks. A helicopter is just so feeble and unstable compared to a jumbo jet, where it seems that a flick of a finger through its propellers simply shakes it to its core.
Anyway, I've slowly been overcoming my fear of heights over the years, and having this once in a lifetime opportunity, I really felt brave enough to take it. And mind you, this was a doors off helicopter, just like those used in war zones and emergency rescues :-) All for the sake of getting up close to a live volcano crater. I thought to myself, any amount of hiking or even 4x4's won't get me there, right? So this was my chance. It was expensive, but even if I can always save up more for the future, I may never have this opportunity again where I have my family to share this special experience with.
