I've finally tried Yoga, after all these years of contemplating whether I can do it or not. I've heard so many good things about this, but I find it too eccentric, maybe because yoga has always been associated with meditation and this is not something that we grew up with.
Anyway, most people these days go to yoga for health and fitness purposes, but as a result, they don't just get the physical benefits because the biggest benefit of yoga is to be able to quiet your mind.
I got this flyer months ago, and it felt like I found the right yoga place for me, featuring a Flexibility Not Required program that removes the competitive stress that some gyms and studios promote plus a studio that promotes simplicity in style. Well, I lost the flyer, and I never got into inquiring about it, just like one of those things.
Finally, one day, a cousin of mine reminded me of it and I went to the internet to look for it. She also invited me to one of the free yoga sessions although I was out of town on that day. Anyway, as part of my new year's plans, I got in touch with my cousin and she booked a session to go together. From then on, I got hooked.
So I asked myself what the key driver was. I had aches and pains on my body too for a few days after my first session, just like any other gym session. But couple of things made me realize this is something fit for me. I don't like high intensity movements, so the slowness of the yoga moves is perfect for me. My first session was great, the instructor really made sure beginner's got comfortable and didn't push us to do more than we could. The studio does have a lot of beginners which means that I don't get pressured to learn all the poses. The instructors encourage you to know your capabilities and limitations and let you push yourself or slow down. Everyday is a different instructor so there is variety. And every instructor varies their session almost every time. I've been there for 6 weeks now and I didn't really get bored. Every session, every week, I learn something new, either because of a different instructor or a different variation. I love how the practice affects the mind. After all, that's what I've always been looking for, peace within me. With every session, I can clear my mind and get to know myself better, physically and emotionally, and spiritually. I learn to focus and obtain balance.
So far, after a month and a half, I'm loving it more and more each session. And I'm getting more hooked into it. When I don't get to go for a session for quite a while, I feel something is missing. I've found the yogini in me :-)
