Sudoku Habit: Training My Brain Power

Welcome to the world of Sudoku! For almost 2 years now, I've been looking forward to the sudoku puzzles that come with my daily paper. Although I've bought my own sudoku puzzle books before, it has only been in the last two years that I've made this a habit.

So for those who do not know what Sudoku is, it's a logic-based puzzle that originated from Japan involving placing numbers in a 9 x 9 grids so that each row and column as well as each 3 x 3 grid within the overall grid, will contain all digits from 1 to 9. The puzzle comes in a partically completed form and the number of filled up numbers depends on the level of difficulty. At first, it seems quite simple, but I was surprised how challenging it can be. And most interestingly, instead of causing you to give up to the more difficult puzzles, it gets pretty addicting.

What I love about this is that it's all solvable, it's just a matter of time. My daily paper gives me puzzles from Level 1 to 5, starting with 1 on Mondays then it gets more difficult as the week progresses. Ironically, the size of the puzzle gets smaller as the week progresses, which even adds to the challenge as I am not able to put my draft numbers or otherwise called pencilmarks on the side, as it is played for more difficult puzzles. Well, that's part of the fun, right?

Since I was a kid, I like brain games and puzzles. Word search was my favorite but I also loved those mini brain games and activity books. Crosswords not so much as I'm more included on numbers and logic rather than vocabulary, LOL. And that is why I love Math and Science more than Reading and Language.

I also love computer and video games. Although among all the games, I love adventure games where there is a story and you complete goals or puzzles to progress, much like in real life. I also like those games that you complete levels although I prefer those endings that are attainable by a normal human being, even with a degree of challenge. I hate games that go on and on forever with no real ending.

To me, all these are part of what I call training my brain power. As we get old, our brains become lazy and it is nice to be able to exercise your minds once in a while. Ironically, instead of causing stress, to me, doing these actually offers me a sense of relaxation with renewed energy.

If you look closely, there's two attributes that I love: it being solvable, and it being logical. There's always an answer. And being a person with an analytical personality, this surely fits me well. No wonder it actually makes me relax :-)
