Travel Writing and Travel Photography

Combining three of the things I love most to do: write stories, take photos, and travel to see new places; I find a passion that remains an aspiration, but can one day be well within my reach. I dream of being a travel writer some day.

At this point, I have travelled to a lot of countries in 4 out of the 7 continents in the world, more than what most people have done in their lifetime. Having the opportunity to see new places and experience new adventures simply ignites a passion in me to keep on this journey. I have a certain feeling from travelling through a long journey, a certain feeling of fulfillment as a result of the partly completed journey that I am onboard in this lifetime. By travelling, I feel that I've achieved something more each day, learned something new each day - something to add to my list of things to do before I die. Somehow, my yearning for learning has always been a part of me, even when I was small. I seem to have a strong attraction to exploring new things, gaining new knowledge, seeing new places, gaining new experiences. And yes, the journey continues as I dream to visit a lot more places and all continents one day.

Taking photos. I learned to take my first pictures from my brother who has a passion for this. And yes, I started with a traditional manual Nikon and Canon camera which my dad and brother had lent me. I even learned how to develop my own pictures during my camera club days. I started to learn to take black and white photos but didn't really take on, although I was pretty interested in the Ansel Adams black and white nature photography, which I first learned about in my visit to Yosemite National Park. I simply love to capture the beauty of things, and of places. Memories often disappear after time, and photos help us remember these moments. Although it cannot bring back the experience, it can bring back a vision as well as the feeling that you've felt before. I have revived my passion for photography recently. Although the point and click cameras of today produce wonderful photos, I bought myself a digital SLR camera so that I can relearn the basics of the manual settings but at the same time took away the use of traditional films.

And lastly, writing stories. Very few people know this about me, but when I was small, I used to write poetry and even short stories. I love to write, just about anything, even letters. I remember vividly one experience I had, I was sitting in the hotel room floor with the notepad and writing poetry while my mom chatted with her family. And I shared my poem with my mom afterwards. I also loved the old notebooks that my brothers used in school, and used them to write my short stories. I think I might still have them kept somewhere. I believe my passion for writing came about as a result of me being on my own a lot when I was small and being a very shy kid. I needed an outlet for my thoughts. Somehow, while I grew up, I lost the art of writing due to modern technology. My focus shifted to the use of computers as my interests peaked to this new wonder, and thus I resorted to typing. My wrist became too lazy to write and my handwriting suffered as a result. I also shifted from poetry and short stories to writing software programs. But with this modern technology of blogging, I hope that I can revive my passion for writing.

So, with these three passions come the dream of being a travel writer, basically learning to write about my travels.

And in my search to improve my writing, I found these key guide topics which can help a writer write his/her travel stories which reflects a part of the author. To me, a good travel story isn't just talking about the places, where to go and what to do. It's about the feelings you get when you visit these places. It's about the new experiences you gain, good or bad, as you travel to these places. These are the things that will make your story unique as it brings a part of the author into the story.
